Asia - Pacific Roundtable debates security, defence

Ways to solve common security challenges in the East Sea were brought up for in-depth discussion at the 28th Asia - Pacific Roundtable (APR) which is taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from June 2.

The topic shaped part of the three-day 10 discussion sessions involving security, defence, peace maintenance and economic development in the region, as well as opportunities and difficulties in building a peaceful and prosperous Asia - Pacific.

Current political issues in Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand also caught interest of policy-makers, scholars and diplomats from 30 countries.

A Vietnamese delegation to the event was led by Vice President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) Nguyen Thai Yen Huong.

Talking with Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Malaysia, deputy head of the DAV’s Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies Tran Viet Thai said China’s illegal position of its Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s waters in early May has been criticised by many countries, including Japan, the US, and India, during this APR.

Many delegates agreed with peaceful but resolute measures Vietnam has taken, Thai said, expressing hope that during the June 4 session, which was scheduled to debate the East Sea issue, more will raise voice in support of Vietnam.
