After nearly two months of continuous combat, with high determination, flexible and innovative application of the art of counteroffensive warfare, and leveraging the unified strength of combined arms, we “fought brilliantly, won spectacularly, and achieved outstanding results.” This led to the failure of the enemy’s plan to expand beyond their outer defensive perimeter, resulting in the elimination of a significant enemy force, the destruction of numerous war vehicles, and the complete collapse of the “Saigon military main force plus maximum U.S. firepower support” formula - the backbone of the “Vietnamisation” strategy. The success of the operation marked a milestone in the development of our art of large-scale combined arms warfare tactics, with the art of using artillery prominently featured.

In modern warfare, strategic airborne landings will involve use of forces on a grand scale, including both troops and heavy weapon systems, and employment of special forces as the central elements to conduct airborn operations. The balance of power is likey to favour the enemy due to their superiority in forces and weapons. The enemy can suddenly alter this balance of power in a direction of the theatre of war. Therefore, the use of artillery-missile force must thoroughly grasp the viewpoint of leveraging the overall power of people’s warfare, using the three-element artillery and missile force to strike anywhere at anytime to triumph over the enemy.

Over half a century ago, to realise a strategic diversion action in preparation for the General Offensive and Uprising of 1968 throughout the South, we launched a large-scale combined arms offensive campaign at the Khe Sanh - Route 9 and achieved a great victory. The Campaign left behind valuable experiences in military art, among which the distinct feature was the art of encircling and cutting off the enemy.

It can be affirmed that in the history of our artillery operations, one of the most important factors to achieve victory is effectively addressing the issue of manoeuvrability of forces and firepower, timely adjusting the battle array, providing effective fire support to infantry, tanks, and handling situations to fulfil assigned tasks. With a clear understanding of this issue, the Operational Command focused on effectively addressing issues related to mobility (mobility routes, vehicles, artillery, repairment, recovery, and the organisation of command coordination, and maintenance and supply), allowing artillery units to manoeuver to their firing positions, ensuring safety, secrecy, and precise timing.
