Vietnamese ship heads for Komodo exercise

Hospital ship HQ-561 of the Vietnam People’s Army on March 25th headed for Indonesia for the upcoming 2014 Komodo multilateral naval exercise between ASEAN and eight of its dialogue partners.

This is the first time for the Navy to join the exercise. The ship will arrive in Batam Island of Indonesia on March 28th and then officially join the event between March 29th and April 3rd.

The HQ-561 (or Khanh Hoa 01), designed by the Shipbuilding Science and Technology Institute of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, was built by the Z189 Factory of the General Department of Defence Industry under the supervision of the Ship Technology Development Company.

Equipped with two main diesel engines with total capacity of nearly 5,000hp, the 70.6m long and 13.2m wide ship can operate at 16 nautical miles per hour with an operation range of 2,500 nautical miles for 45 days and nights in bad weather, even with winds at level 10.

The “hospital at sea” has as many departments as a normal hospital on land, to treat patients with many different diseases, even in critical condition.
