Japanese Defence Minister Itsuno Onodera received Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, on the sideline of the 5th Japan-ASEAN Deputy Defence Ministerial Forum between February 17th and 19th.

The Japanese minister affirmed that Vietnam’s growing position in the international arena had considerably contributed to ensuring peace, stability and development in the region.
Japan has always attached much importance to enhancing the strategic partnership with Vietnam, including defence cooperation, he added.
Minister Itsuno Onodera affirmed that Japan and Vietnam would continue boosting their defence cooperation to effectively deal with non-traditional security threats, especially natural disasters.
For his part, General Vinh highly appreciated the two countries’ defence cooperation achievements over the past time and believed that bilateral defence cooperation played an important role in their traditional relations.
The Vietnamese general hoped that Vietnam and Japan would deepen their defence cooperation to match the existing potential and desire of the two sides through dialogues at the deputy defence ministerial level, cooperation between armed services, and sharing experience in conducting UN peacekeeping activities.
